The Gujjar Colony plant demonstrated at commercial scale that the Punjab's urban dairy waste can be converted into a bankable stream of clean fuel. It was never intended to solve one colony's waste problem alone — its purpose was to establish a working model that private investors can take forward across the province. That model is now being replicated.
Large-scale plants at notified cattle colonies and cattle markets, carrying private investment. Each plant is designed with several revenue streams at once: biomethane supplied to local industry via cylinder cascades, carbon credits from captured methane, and organic fertiliser slurry — together supporting a self-sustaining operation and maintenance model.
Dairy farm owners are central to this model. The Energy Department provides technical expertise to large registered farms so that owners can build biogas plants on their own land with full departmental support — turning manure that was a disposal burden into a reliable energy input, improving conditions inside the farm, and connecting farmers to the renewable energy value chain.
