Two of the Initiative's four pillars depend on the private sector — commercial plants at cattle colonies, and dairy farms building plants of their own.

A Proven Model, Now Scaling Province-Wide

The Gujjar Colony plant demonstrated at commercial scale that the Punjab's urban dairy waste can be converted into a bankable stream of clean fuel. It was never intended to solve one colony's waste problem alone — its purpose was to establish a working model that private investors can take forward across the province. That model is now being replicated.

Two Ways to Take Part

Pillar 1 — Commercial Plants

Large-scale plants at notified cattle colonies and cattle markets, carrying private investment. Each plant is designed with several revenue streams at once: biomethane supplied to local industry via cylinder cascades, carbon credits from captured methane, and organic fertiliser slurry — together supporting a self-sustaining operation and maintenance model.

Pillar 4 — Technical Assistance for Private Farms

Dairy farm owners are central to this model. The Energy Department provides technical expertise to large registered farms so that owners can build biogas plants on their own land with full departmental support — turning manure that was a disposal burden into a reliable energy input, improving conditions inside the farm, and connecting farmers to the renewable energy value chain. There is no direct capital cost to government.

Planning Your Own Biogas Project

General considerations for anyone evaluating a biogas project of their own.

Project Planning

Assess your feedstock's volume and consistency, evaluate site logistics and land availability, and engage stakeholders — community, regulators and potential gas off-takers — early. A feasibility study should confirm the numbers before capital is committed.

Technology Selection

Match the digester design to your feedstock. Continuously Stirred Tank Reactors (CSTR), as used at Gujjar Colony, suit high-volume, pumpable manure. Fixed-dome, floating-drum and plug-flow designs may suit smaller or drier feedstocks — the right choice depends on volume, consistency and available capital.

Plant Sizing

Size the digester to your daily feedstock volume and the retention time it requires. Undersizing limits gas output; oversizing raises costs without a proportional benefit. Use the biogas potential calculator as a starting point, then validate with a professional feasibility study.

Operation & Maintenance

Reliable output depends on consistent feedstock quality, digester temperature control, routine desludging, and regular safety inspections of gas-handling equipment. Trained operating staff are essential to running a plant safely and efficiently.

Bio-Fertilizer Utilisation

Digested slurry (digestate) is a nutrient-rich organic soil conditioner. Proper storage and timely field application capture its agricultural value and prevent nutrient loss — turning a plant by-product into an additional revenue stream.

Carbon Revenue

Capturing methane that would otherwise be released generates measurable, tradeable emission reductions. The Gujjar Colony plant alone is assessed at approximately 36,000 carbon credits a year — a revenue stream worth factoring into any commercial-scale plan.
